Coffee, Therapy, and Mindfulness
Supporting healing and growth ☕️🤍 ✨
Good morning!
Spring is in full bloom and it’s been so nice seeing people out and about, embracing the warmer weather! Personally, I’ve been enjoying going on more walks — a highlight of getting outside is seeing all of the happy dogs in our neighborhood. If you’re feeling down, I truly believe that seeing or petting an animal can make you feel better.
Instant mood booster.
Speaking of things that can make us feel good, we’re talking about coffee, therapy, and mindfulness in this post. I hope one of these topics resonates with you and if not, at least you got a Corgi GIF out of it.
Have a great week!
All the best,
Mandy

Is Your Daily Coffee Making You Feel Anxious?
The Relationship Between Caffeine and Anxiety
For many of us, drinking coffee is something that brings us joy and helps start our day. It not only tastes good, but it makes us feel energized and has many health benefits. If you’re anything like me, you might associate the act of drinking coffee with something positive and notice it increasing your mood. Although there are many benefits of drinking coffee, caffeine can have different side effects for everyone. If you deal with anxiety, it can be helpful to be aware and mindful of the impact coffee might be having on your symptoms.
Please don’t make my anxiety worse.
MENTAL HEALTH
Growth in Therapy
As a therapist, one of the biggest privileges is witnessing clients’ growth. Since this time of the year represents growth and renewal for so many of us, it can be a natural time to reflect on your own progress. It’s important to remember that every individual’s journey is unique and growth isn’t linear. If you’re in therapy or thinking about starting, here are some common signs of growth that deserve recognition:
Increased self-awareness: You may become more aware of your thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and patterns. This allows you to have a better understanding of yourself and your experiences.
Improved coping skills: Therapy can help you develop healthier ways of coping with stressors, challenges and difficult emotions. You may also learn how to build off of strategies that you’re already practicing.
Increased self-esteem: Through therapy, you may develop a more positive self-image, learn to appreciate your strengths, and feel more confident in your abilities.
Strengthened relationships: You may improve your communication skills and interpersonal dynamics, leading to healthier and more fulfilling relationships with others.
Increased emotional regulation: In therapy, you may learn how to manage intense emotions such as anger, stress, or anxiety, leading to a greater sense of emotional stability and well-being.

Making Art is My Playful Meditation Alternative
When I started taking ceramics classes in 2020, my therapist thought it would be good for me. Once you put your piece in the kiln, she said, you have to let go of the outcome. In theory, a great way to combat perfectionism.

MINDFULNESS
RAIN Mindfulness Exercise ☔️
RAIN is one of my favorite mindfulness practices since it helps you focus on the present and cope with uncomfortable thoughts and emotions. Plus, the acronym makes it easy to remember and feels fitting for the month of April.
To get started, sit or lie down in a comfortable position. Close your eyes or let your gaze soften. Take three slow, deep breaths and follow the steps below:
Recognize: Pause to recognize any triggers and the emotions you’re experiencing.
Allow: Acknowledge that it’s okay to have these thoughts and feelings without trying to change them.
Investigate: Dive deeper and do a real-time assessment of why you’re feeling this way. Observe your thoughts and where you’re experiencing the emotions in your body.
Non-Identification/Nurture: Remind yourself that you are not defined by your thoughts and feelings and they will eventually pass.
Conclude this practice by taking three slow, deep breaths. Continue to be mindful and kind to yourself throughout your day.
If you’re interested in learning more about the RAIN mindfulness practice, I’ve included an article at the bottom in the resources section.
