Five Signs Therapy is Working

Witnessing clients grow is one of the most rewarding aspects of being a therapist. Everyone’s journey looks different, and progress can take time. If you’re in therapy or thinking about starting, here are a few signs that therapy is making a difference and your efforts are paying off.

  1. You have better awareness of your triggers and patterns: You may become more aware of what triggers certain thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, as well as patterns in your responses. This awareness brings you closer to finding effective coping strategies, supporting both healing and growth.

  2. You feel more confident in yourself and your abilities: Therapy helps build self-trust, making challenges feel less overwhelming and boosting your confidence in handling them, as well as recognizing your personal strengths.

  3. You have stronger boundaries: Setting and enforcing boundaries may become easier, and you’re learning to not feel guilty about prioritizing your needs. This can lead to a stronger relationship with both yourself and others.

  4. You’re making decisions that align with your values: Therapy helps you identify what truly matters, leading to more value-driven decisions. This brings a sense of balance as you prioritize what’s most important to you.

  5. You’re more present: You may feel more grounded and present in your day-to-day life, becoming more connected with yourself and your experiences, and gaining a deeper appreciation for life.

What Sports Can Teach Us About Connection

This past week, I’ve enjoyed seeing the excitement and celebrations surrounding recent sporting events. As someone who enjoys sports, it’s been inspiring to watch fans come together to support the Knicks and share in moments of joy, hope, and connection. Hearing the athletes’ stories of perseverance and dedication also serves as a reminder of the hard work, resilience, and support that often exist behind every achievement. It’s special to witness what these moments mean not only to the athletes, but also to their families, communities, and fans.

Similarly, I’ve been following the excitement surrounding the FIFA Club World Cup, with fans traveling from all over the world to support their teams. It has been wonderful to see people from different cultures and backgrounds exploring new places, connecting with one another, and celebrating a shared passion. I’ve especially loved seeing fans embrace each other’s chants, traditions, and enthusiasm.

While these sports and events may be different, they highlight something deeply human: our need for connection and community. Sports are more than just games—they create experiences, memories, and moments of belonging that bring people together. In a time when many people feel disconnected, these celebrations serve as a reminder of the power of community and the joy that can come from sharing meaningful experiences with others.

I didn’t realize that so much of what was making me unhappy and unsatisfied in my life was that I’d created all of these boundaries for myself and I’d made all these decisions about the type of person that I am, and about what I’m capable of handling.
