Summer Reflections: Rest, Relationships, and Resilience

Exploring EMDR therapy, taking breaks on vacation, communication with your partner, and therapy & tennis 🎾🤍✨

Hello everyone!

I hope you’ve been enjoying your summer. This month, we’re diving into a little bit of everything—how EMDR therapy works, why reset days on vacation are needed, what healthy communication in relationships can look like, and what we can learn from pro athletes. As always, I hope you find something here that resonates with you.

What Is EMDR Therapy? How It Works and Who It Can Help

EMDR has been talked about more in the media recently, but what exactly is it? EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1987, it’s a powerful, research-supported therapy designed to help people heal from trauma and distressing life events. EMDR works by helping the brain reprocess painful memories so they no longer feel as intense or overwhelming.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR involves briefly focusing on a specific memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or tapping. This process supports the brain’s natural healing abilities and helps reduce the emotional charge of past experiences.

Therapy and Tennis

If you’ve been following Wimbledon, you may have noticed more players speaking openly about their mental health and the role of therapy in their journeys. Amanda Anisimova, who took an eight-month break from tennis to focus on her mental well-being, made a stunning return by defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and advancing to her first Wimbledon semifinal. In her post-match interview, she shared:

“When I took my break, a lot of people told me that you would never make it to the top again if you take so much time away from the game. And that was a little hard to digest because I did want to come back and still achieve a lot and, you know, win a grand slam one day.

"Just me being able to prove that you can get back to the top if you prioritize yourself. So that's been incredibly special to me. Yeah, it means a lot."

After Alexander Zverev, the No. 3 seed, was eliminated, he candidly told reporters he felt "very, very alone" and was considering therapy for the first time, saying, “For the first time in my life, I’ll probably need it.” Sabalenka, in turn, acknowledged the emotional toll the sport can take and revealed she’s worked with a therapist for five years. “It’s really important to be open and to talk about what you’re experiencing,” she said. “Because if you’re going to keep it inside, it’s just going to destroy you.”

It’s powerful to see top athletes normalize therapy and speak out about the emotional challenges behind their performance. Their openness is a reminder that prioritizing mental health is crucial for your overall well-being. Whether you're on the court or navigating everyday life, asking for help is a brave and meaningful step forward.
