When No One Sees Your Anxiety

Recognizing the signs of high-functioning anxiety, the quiet growth that happens in therapy, embracing a slower summer, and the science behind manifestation 🌊🐚✨

Hello everyone!

This month, we're exploring the things that often go unnoticed—like the quiet weight of high-functioning anxiety, the less obvious signs that therapy is working, and the science behind something you’ve probably heard a lot about: manifesting. I’ve also included some small joys to help you embrace a slower summer.

As a therapist, I see how much effort it takes to appear calm and collected when you're struggling inside. I also know that real growth doesn't always look or feel the way we expect. It can be uncomfortable, slow, and even confusing. But that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

Keeping cool and slowing down.

Wishing you a lovely rest of June!

Warmly,

Mandy

High-Functioning Anxiety: What It Is and How to Know if You Have It

Ever feel like you're doing all the things like checking tasks off your to-do list, showing up for others, juggling responsibilities—yet inside, you’re constantly battling racing thoughts, self-doubt, or a fear of messing it all up? If so, you might relate to something called high-functioning anxiety.

High-functioning anxiety isn’t a formal mental health diagnosis, but it’s a term that resonates deeply with many people, especially high-achievers, perfectionists, and those who appear to have it “together” on the outside, but feel overwhelmed and emotionally drained on the inside.

Signs of Growth in Therapy (That Don’t Always Feel Like Growth)

One of the most rewarding parts of being a therapist is witnessing clients grow. But growth, both in and outside of therapy, doesn’t always feel good at first. It can be unfamiliar, uncomfortable, and emotional. That discomfort doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong; it often means you’re finally doing things differently to support your healing. It’s not easy, but it is progress.

Whether you’re currently in therapy or thinking about starting, here are a few signs that it’s working and that your hard work is paying off:

  • Saying “no” and feeling uncomfortable afterward.

  • Becoming more aware of your triggers.

  • Feeling more emotional because you’re no longer numbing or avoiding.

  • Questioning old patterns instead of automatically falling into them.

  • Letting others down instead of abandoning yourself.

  • Allowing yourself to make mistakes.

Embracing a Slow Summer

Last month we explored the idea of reconnecting with your younger self, and that reflection has now inspired a new theme of embracing a slow summer.

While summer often comes with busy schedules, it also offers a chance to pause and savor the quieter moments. Consider this your gentle reminder to reflect on how you want to move through the season. What do you want to be truly present for? What small joys are calling for your attention?

Some ideas of small joys to embrace this season:

  • Strolling through a farmer’s market

  • Collecting sea shells

  • Reading by the beach

  • Enjoying a meal outdoors

  • Taking mindful walks

  • Journaling outside in the morning with coffee or tea

  • Taking a nap in a hammock or cozy spot

  • Making something with your hands (painting, pottery, DIY crafts)

  • Picking berries or visiting a local orchard

Let this be the summer you give yourself permission to slow down and soak it in.
